Safety Switch Installation

Need a Safety Switch Installation in Adelaide?

Are the people in your home protected with safety switch? Star Plus Group electricians can help protect the people you love.

Safety switches – also known as residual current circuit breakers (RCCBs) or residual current devices (RCDs) – have been in common use in Australia for over 20 years. However, feedback to Master Electricians through members and directly from the public indicates, there is a high level of confusion as to what safety switches do.

Safety switches are different to circuit breakers and surge protectors. A safety switch will detect a current leaking to earth and will trip the circuit within as little as 30 milliseconds, and no more than 300 milliseconds. This stops the flow of electricity through the body of the person in contact with the circuit, in less than the length of a critical heartbeat.

Safety switches save lives.

Every year, 15 people are killed in Australian homes in electrical accidents that could have been prevented, if a safety switch was fitted on the electrical circuit. As many as 20 times that number of people are hospitalised with serious electrical injuries and burns.

A safety switch stops these accidents occurring by cutting off power to the circuit in as little as 0.03 seconds. Less than the length of a critical heartbeat. They are the simplest way to protect people in your home from electrical accidents. No job is too big or too small for our experienced electricians.

Is your family protected?

Safety switches have been mandatory on the power circuits of new homes since the early 1990s, and light circuits in new homes since the late 2000s. Unfortunately, other circuits in the home, such as your air conditioning, hot water, or pool pump circuit, may not be protected. Homes built before this time have most likely not been retrofitted with the life saving devices. Meaning that nearly 40 per cent of all Australians are not protected.

Safety switch installation can protect against fires.

Faults can occur in appliances, tools and wiring – due to wear and tear, dampness, poor design or poor installation. Undetected, these faults could eventually cause a fire, property damage, or personal injury. Thankfully, because of their sensitivity, safety switches provide a means of early fault detection.

In short why test RCD safety switches?

RCD Safety Switches form part of the overall requirements under the “Duty of Care” and the responsibility under the Occupational Health Safety laws. In other words, Safety Switches do perform part of the safety requirements. However, without regular maintenance they may not trip in time or at worse not work at all. So get your Safety Switches tested today. What is stopping you!

Related Products:
  • Safety Switch – Safety switches stop the flow of electricity on a circuit if it is detected to be leaking to earth. The new Wiring Rules require safety switches on all circuits in domestic/residential installations. This includes fixed electrical equipment like cooktops, hot water systems and also air conditioning units. They can be distinguished from circuit breakers and surge protectors by a button marked test, located on the front of the device.
  • Circuit Breaker – Circuit breakers and fuses are designed to protect the electrical cables and fittings of the home from being overloaded or damaged. They cut power when electrical wiring in the home has too much current running through it. Circuit breakers rarely protect humans from electrocution or electric shock.
  • Surge Protector – Can be fitted to switchboards to safeguard appliances against a spike in electrical voltage caused by a lightning strike or other external event. Some power boards or extension leads also have this function, however these devices do not offer any protection against electrical death or injury.
